Have you heard about freediving but aren't sure you're ready to take the plunge? Do you love snorkeling but want to start venturing below the surface? Do you just love being outdoors, on and in the water, and want to explore the amazing underwater kelp and wildlife that San Diego has to offer? If yes to any of these, this is the trip for you!

This 4-5 hour excursion is an expedition with as much or little coaching as you'd like. You will learn the basics of freediving, including static breath holds, equalization, and surface rescues from professional freediving coach, and then get to immediately put those new skills into action as you explore the amazing sea life and kelp forests of San Diego. Best yet, you get to spend the day on a boat enjoying the scenery from the ocean!

Your trip will be led by a US Coast Guard licensed captain as well as a freediving coach. Our crew is extremely well trained in providing an experience that is fun and challenging, while at the same time being comfortable and more than anything SAFE! We do not care how deep you go or how long you hold your breath…that is not what freediving is about. What we care about is showing you what you are naturally capable of, as well as the beauty of the ocean we have in our backyard. And if you do want a challenge, we are here to safely escort you deeper!

Included: Surffur parka for changing and keeping warm on the boat, licensed captain, and a freediving coach.

Required: BASIC SWIMMING ABILITY! We will have buoyant wetsuits, but not life vests, and we will be moving around on the surface and below the surface of the water so you need to know how to swim! You also need to be comfortable in the ocean, as that is where this excursion takes place.

Things to bring: Snorkel gear (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins, weight belt). If you need to rent gear you can do so at additional cost through the shop. Also bring a towel, swimsuit, sun protection (hat/sunglasses/sunscreen)

Preparation: Make sure you are well hydrated and rested! These both have a huge impact on your breath hold has well as your ability to clear your ears. It is a long day and you will need your energy!

If you are prone to motion sickness, we HIGHLY encourage taking over the counter medication like Dramamine. While it may make you drowsy, we have never had anyone fall asleep in the water! It is the cheapest insurance policy you can purchase for this trip…being seasick is no fun at all.

Schedule:

0700-0730 Meet at the shop, get dressed out, board the boat

0730-0800 Intro to breath holds

0800-0900 Transit to kelp forest

0900-1030 Basic freediving technique and safety, dive through the kelp!

1030-1130 Return to shop
